Another Crazy Day in AI: An Almost Daily Newsletter

Hello, AI Enthusiasts.

AI’s making art, learning physics, and causing drama...

ChatGPT just got a major upgrade! OpenAI rolled out GPT-4o’s new image-generation feature, letting users create visuals straight from the chat.

But AI’s latest trick—turning photos into Ghibli-style art—is stirring up debate. Stunning? Yes. Legally questionable? Also yes.

And while AI’s busy painting, Archetype AI is out here learning physics. It doesn’t just process data—it understands the real world. The future of automation just got a lot more interesting.

Stay tuned—AI’s not done yet.

Here's another crazy day in AI:

  • OpenAI’s new image generation tool

  • ChatGPT’s Ghibli Art stirs copyright concerns

  • Archetype AI—the ChatGPT that understands physics

What can OpenAI’s new image generator actually do?

OpenAI has introduced an upgraded image generation tool within GPT-4o, designed to create more refined and practical visuals. This update aims to improve accuracy, particularly in areas where past models struggled—like generating readable text within images and handling intricate details. The goal is to offer more control, making it easier to fine-tune images through step-by-step refinements instead of relying on a single prompt.

By integrating image generation directly into GPT-4o’s workflow, OpenAI is making AI-assisted visuals more interactive. Users can tweak and refine images over multiple exchanges, helping achieve results that are more aligned with specific needs—whether for design, content creation, or personal projects.

What’s different this time?

  • Better text handling – Words in images appear clearer and more natural

  • More precise editing – Users can refine images in stages rather than starting from scratch

  • Improved scene composition – Handles complex visuals with multiple objects more effectively

  • Context-aware adjustments – AI remembers previous edits to offer smarter refinements

  • Greater stylistic range – Supports both photorealistic and artistic styles with more accuracy

This update gives users more influence over the creative process, making AI-generated images feel less like random outputs and more like a tool for real-world applications. The ability to refine images in stages is a notable improvement, helping users get closer to their intended vision. However, like any evolving technology, it still has limitations. Complex designs don’t always come out as expected, and the AI might not always capture highly specific artistic details.

There’s also a growing emphasis on responsible AI use. OpenAI has introduced safeguards, such as metadata markers on generated images, to help distinguish AI-made content. While these measures aim to promote transparency, ongoing adjustments will be needed to address ethical concerns and potential misuse. These measures are important as AI-generated visuals become more common in professional and creative spaces.

A new ChatGPT feature that transforms images into Studio Ghibli-style artwork has captivated fans—but also reignited concerns over AI and copyright ethics. While users delight in seeing their pets and memes turned into Ghibli-esque illustrations, questions linger about whether AI tools should mimic distinct artistic styles without permission. Even Studio Ghibli’s founder, Hayao Miyazaki, has long expressed his disdain for AI-generated animation, calling it an “insult to life itself.” With legal experts weighing in and OpenAI staying quiet on licensing details, this controversy highlights the ongoing clash between AI innovation and artistic ownership.

Ever wonder how quickly technology can transform right before our eyes?

The latest a16z podcast just dropped some serious insights about the GenAI landscape that might make your head spin.

Hosted by a16z General Partner Anish Acharya and Partner Olivia Moore, this discussion dives into the GenAI 100, a ranking of the top 50 AI-first web products and mobile apps based on real user data. It unpacks which applications are dominating, which emerging trends are shaping the space, and—most importantly—which products are actually making money.

What Caught Our Attention:

  • 17 brand new companies emerged in web rankings, signaling relentless innovation

  • Consumer AI is still in its early stages, despite what many might assume

  • Unexpected players are completely reshaping the technological leaderboard

  • Emerging trends like AI video and "vibe coding" are challenging our expectations

Some Jaw-Dropping Moments:

  • ChatGPT doubled its weekly active users from 200 million to 400 million in months

  • A new AI model, DeepSeek, rocketed to the #2 spot with just 10 days of data

  • Companion apps and text-to-code tools are seeing massive, unexpected adoption

The conversation highlights just how unpredictable consumer AI has become. Some tools that seemed unstoppable six months ago have already plateaued, while unexpected contenders are now leading the pack. The rise of AI-generated video and low-code/no-code platforms shows how creative and accessible technology is becoming a major driver of innovation.

What stands out in this year’s rankings is how some products have turned initial curiosity into something lasting, while others have struggled to keep people engaged. The companies that continue to grow are the ones that have found ways to stay relevant, proving that real value—not just hype—is what keeps users coming back.

For a grounded look at how AI-powered products are evolving and what’s coming next, this episode is worth a listen.

Another Crazy Day in AI: An Almost Daily Newsletter

Hello, AI Enthusiasts.

Let’s see what AI has been up to while you were working.

Google DeepMind just dropped Gemini 2.5, its sharpest AI yet, designed for next-level reasoning and decision-making. The company's Chief Technology Officer calls it a game-changer—early tests suggest he’s not exaggerating.

Educators, take note: St. Bonaventure University is hosting a spring forum on AI in education, tackling bias, integrity, and best practices in the classroom.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT just got better at talking (and listening). A new voice mode update makes it more natural, less interrupt-y, and surprisingly in tune with emotions.

One thing’s for sure—AI will have something new by morning.

Here's another crazy day in AI:

  • Google’s smartest AI yet? Meet Gemini 2.5

  • AI Spring Forum invites educators to join the conversation

  • ZDNET’s editor tests ChatGPT’s new voice update

  • Some AI tools to try out

TODAY'S FEATURED ITEM: Gemini 2.5 Brings Smarter AI Reasoning

Is Google’s new AI model the smartest one yet?

Google DeepMind just introduced Gemini 2.5, their most advanced AI model yet, designed to think before it responds. This “thinking model” showcases improved reasoning, coding abilities, and overall intelligence. Google DeepMind CTO, Koray Kavukcuoglu, explains how Gemini 2.5 Pro Experimental is outperforming competitors and setting new benchmarks in AI capabilities.

A Closer Look at Gemini 2.5:

  • Leads LMArena leaderboard with unprecedented performance metrics

  • Introduces advanced "thinking model" approach for more sophisticated reasoning

  • Expands context understanding with a massive 1 million token window

  • Delivers exceptional results across math, science, and coding domains

  • Demonstrates breakthrough problem-solving capabilities

  • Creates complex applications with remarkable precision

  • Processes multiple data types seamlessly, from text to code repositories

AI has made impressive progress over the years, but one of the biggest challenges remains: making it truly capable of deep reasoning rather than just predicting likely responses. With Gemini 2.5, Google DeepMind is pushing AI to be more thoughtful, not just faster. The ability to break down complex problems and generate structured responses could make a big difference in fields like scientific research, data analysis, and software development.

But what does this mean in practice? While Gemini 2.5 is setting new records, the real test is whether it leads to meaningful improvements in how people use AI day-to-day. Smarter models open up new possibilities, but they also raise new challenges—especially around trust, accuracy, and real-world impact. As AI becomes more integrated into work and decision-making, the conversation will shift from raw performance to how well these advancements translate into practical benefits.
