TODAY'S FEATURED ITEM: Can AI Run a Business? This Test Says Yes

Would you pay $200 to have an AI start a profitable business for you?

Chris Koerner, an entrepreneur, shared an intriguing experiment on X (formerly Twitter) where he used ChatGPT’s $200/month pro plan to test whether AI could run a business on its own. His idea was simple—find free pianos on Facebook Marketplace, arrange pickups, and resell them for a profit. The twist? AI handled nearly everything.

Here’s how it worked:

  • ChatGPT searched for free pianos in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

  • It messaged sellers, offering $200 to have the piano picked up.

  • A spreadsheet tracked conversations, offers, and status updates.

  • AI refined its responses and negotiation strategies over time.

  • The goal was to generate a profit by reselling or repurposing the pianos.

The experiment raises interesting questions about AI’s role in business. It’s one thing to use AI for automation, but what happens when it takes on decision-making and strategy? In this case, ChatGPT wasn’t just assisting—it was actively running parts of the business, from outreach to logistics.

Of course, AI isn’t perfect. It can handle structured tasks well but struggles with unpredictability. A seller changing their mind, unexpected transportation costs, or an overlooked detail in negotiations can throw off the entire process. While Koerner’s approach was innovative, it also highlights the limits of AI-driven business operations. Human oversight is still essential, but experiments like this hint at a future where AI plays an even bigger role in entrepreneurship.

TODAY'S FEATURED ITEM: Work Is Changing—Are You Ready?

What if the traditional 9-to-5 job as we know it is truly coming to an end?

In a recent HBR IdeaCast episode, Deborah Perry Piscione, CEO of Work3 Institute and co-author of Employment Is Dead, talks with host Alison Beard about how emerging technologies are fundamentally reshaping the way we work. She argues that we’re at a turning point where conventional employment models are giving way to more flexible, decentralized structures. As AI, blockchain, and digital platforms continue to evolve, the very definition of a “job” is shifting, raising important questions about what work will look like in the years ahead.

What’s changing in the workforce?

  • The rise of AI-assisted and decentralized work is reshaping how tasks are assigned, managed, and completed.

  • More people are adopting portfolio careers, piecing together work across different industries, projects, and roles.

  • Skills are becoming more valuable than degrees, shifting the focus from formal education to continuous learning and adaptability.

  • Blockchain, smart contracts, and DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) are automating processes, reducing the need for traditional management structures.

  • AI-driven productivity could lead to shorter workweeks, redefining how we measure success and efficiency.

  • Employers will need to rethink their approach to hiring, leadership, and workplace culture as workers seek more autonomy and flexibility.

These shifts present both opportunities and challenges. For many, a world of flexible, skill-based work is an exciting prospect, allowing people to pursue multiple interests and build careers on their own terms. But for those who find security in traditional employment structures, the shift can feel uncertain. The expectation of a steady job with clear career progression may no longer be the default, making adaptability more important than ever.

Organizations, too, will need to navigate this change carefully. While some companies are already experimenting with AI-driven workflows and decentralized teams, the transition won’t be seamless. Striking the right balance—leveraging technology while ensuring stability and fairness—will be key. Meanwhile, individuals who stay open to learning and evolving with the workforce may find that this new era offers more control, creativity, and opportunities than ever before.

What does it mean when a smaller, more efficient AI model outperforms its larger counterparts?

DeepSeek, a rising Chinese AI company, has just released Janus Pro 7B, an open-source vision model that’s shaking up global technology. Michael Nuñez, an author on VentureBeat, delves into the strategic timing of this release, which coincides with a U.S. AI stock sell-off, and its implications for global AI competition. This latest innovation follows DeepSeek’s R1 language model, raising intensified concerns about China’s growing dominance in the AI sector.

Why does this matter? Here’s what stands out:

  • Compact yet powerful: With just 7 billion parameters, it punches well above its weight, handling complex tasks like image generation and visual question answering with remarkable accuracy.

  • Energy-efficient design: Its smaller size reduces computational demands, lowering costs and environmental impact while maintaining high functionality.

  • Broad accessibility: Open-source availability makes this cutting-edge model accessible to a global audience, from startups to established enterprises.

  • Timing and strategy: Its launch comes amid shifts in global AI competition, particularly as U.S. tech companies face slowing momentum.

  • Challenging conventions: Janus Pro 7B questions the prevailing assumption that larger models are inherently superior, offering a fresh perspective on AI innovation.

DeepSeek’s timing in launching Janus Pro 7B is no coincidence. Following the recent debut of its R1 large language model, the company has positioned itself as a formidable competitor, intensifying market anxiety. The efficiency-driven approach of Janus Pro 7B contrasts sharply with the resource-heavy models dominating the AI industry, signaling a potential shift in what defines success in the field.

The broader implications of this release are hard to ignore. For enterprise decision-makers, Janus Pro 7B offers an alternative to high-cost proprietary models, opening up opportunities to integrate advanced vision AI without massive infrastructure investments. However, it also raises important questions about the future of the AI race. If companies like DeepSeek can deliver cutting-edge results with smaller, more efficient systems, how will this affect the trajectory of AI innovation globally?

As the global AI competition heats up, developments like Janus Pro 7B force us to rethink assumptions about leadership in this space. DeepSeek’s strategy challenges the status quo, suggesting that innovation isn’t just about size and scale but about smart, efficient design. Whether this marks a new chapter in AI or a short-lived trend remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the race is far from over.
