Is ChatGPT becoming a serious search engine competitor?

OpenAI has just given ChatGPT a significant update: real-time web search. Reported by Melissa Heikkilä and Mat Honan for MIT Technology Review, this feature puts ChatGPT in closer competition with established search engines like Google and Bing. Now, instead of only relying on data up to October 2023, ChatGPT can search the internet for live updates, whether it’s breaking news, sports scores, or trending topics. This development raises an intriguing question: Could ChatGPT’s conversational search capabilities pose a real challenge to traditional search engines?

How ChatGPT’s New Search Works:

  • Live Answers to Recent Questions: ChatGPT now retrieves and provides answers from the web on current events and real-time topics.

  • Seamless, Automatic Search: When it detects a need for live data, ChatGPT searches the web automatically, while users can also choose to start searches as needed.

  • Expanded Reach for Subscribers: Currently available to paid users, the feature is expected to roll out to all users in the future.

  • Engaging Follow-Up Conversations: ChatGPT retains chat history, allowing it to remember prior discussions and build on them, creating a more nuanced search experience.

  • Partnerships with Established Sources: OpenAI leverages reputable publishers like Reuters and the Financial Times, along with broader online sources, to generate reliable responses.

  • Remaining Challenges: There are some risks—like the potential for misinformation—especially when AI retrieves information from sources that may not be fully accurate or vetted.

These features reflect OpenAI’s ambition to make ChatGPT a flexible, knowledgeable assistant for users. With the power of live search, ChatGPT is no longer confined to past data, enhancing its relevance and utility. Rather than serving up a list of sources, it synthesizes information into cohesive answers and supports users in exploring topics through ongoing conversation. This unique format could appeal to users looking for something beyond the traditional search experience.

Yet, there are some important limitations. For example, as natural language models can sometimes introduce inaccuracies or "hallucinations," ChatGPT’s AI-generated responses may occasionally pull in questionable information from less reliable sites, a known concern with open-access web data. As University of Washington’s Chirag Shah points out, the AI’s format and approach differ significantly from Google’s, where users still trust the traditional, vetted link results. OpenAI will need to manage these issues as it ventures deeper into the world of real-time information retrieval.

As ChatGPT’s search capability evolves, it opens a broader question about how AI might reshape the online information landscape. This feature could shift user expectations around search itself, making it less about endless scrolling and more about direct interaction. Whether or not it ultimately rivals search engines like Google, ChatGPT’s enhanced role in information gathering and interaction is a sign of AI’s growing influence in how we find and use information.

In a world drowning in data, how do organizations stay afloat while ensuring they're swimming in the right direction?

As the amount of data generated globally continues to soar, organizations are facing the challenge of finding actionable insights in an ocean of information.

The World Economic Forum brings us a timely perspective from Igor Jablokov (CEO of Pryon) and Cosima Piepenbrock (Head of Product Intelligence & UX) on navigating today's data challenges. With data expected to reach 175 zettabytes by 2025—triple the amount from 2019—organizations need more than just advanced tools; they need a clear strategy for turning this flood of information into meaningful insights. They outline practical approaches for organizations to harness AI's potential while maintaining data integrity.

Three Practical Approaches for Responsible AI Use:

  • Expand Information Visibility:

With AI, companies can weave a "knowledge fabric" from diverse data sources. This approach enables leaders across all levels to access a comprehensive view of information, making insights available to more people, not just those with exclusive data access.

  • Curate Reliable Data Sources

By creating a curated library of trustworthy information—such as proprietary data, licensed publications, and verified public resources—organizations can rely on dependable insights and protect themselves against misinformation.

  • Balance AI Use with Control

Establishing a framework for monitoring AI content and tools allows organizations to reduce the risks of bias, error, or inaccuracy. This measured approach makes it easier to scale AI use without compromising data quality or control.

As organizations continue to implement generative AI, responsibly managing these vast data sources becomes crucial. Jablokov and Piepenbrock point out that, without thoughtful safeguards, AI’s potential risks—from spreading misinformation to compromising proprietary data—could lead to unintended consequences that impact both reputation and trust. These risks remind us that simply having access to data doesn’t equate to meaningful insights.

In the future, the companies that thrive will be those that balance AI-driven innovation with robust data governance. They’ll be the ones to leverage AI as a transformative tool, helping their teams make better, faster, and more accurate decisions. With strategies in place to address responsible AI use, these organizations will have a competitive edge in not just handling but truly understanding the flood of data surrounding them.

The goal isn't to process everything, but to process what matters most—and to do it well.

Another Crazy Day in AI: An Almost Daily Newsletter

Hello, AI Enthusiasts.

This Tuesday evening, after the hustle of the day, let’s explore some intriguing developments in AI.

With AI rapidly reshaping industries, the race to implement it across enterprises is on—but few CIOs have achieved full implementation. What’s holding them back? Find out in the recent Salesforce survey report, which highlights the challenges faced by organizations in their AI adoption journey.

Plus, check out the insights from the new longitudinal GenAI adoption survey by the Wharton AI & Analytics Initiative and GBK Collective. Also, catch Elon Musk's recent thoughts on AI evolution, as he claims it may soon rival human intelligence.

Let’s jump right in!

Here's another crazy day in AI:

  • Data and Security concerns leave only 11% of CIOs fully implementing AI

  • AI Adoption Report: Wharton highlights Gen AI's expanding role

  • Musk predictions on AI's exponential growth and human parity

How prepared are businesses really for the AI revolution, and what's holding them back?

A recent Salesforce survey of 150 enterprise CIOs reveals a striking contrast between AI aspirations and reality. While business leaders widely acknowledge AI's transformative potential, the actual implementation tells a different story. This comprehensive study across 18 countries and 17 industries shows that organizations are taking a more calculated approach, focusing on building strong foundations before diving into full-scale AI adoption.

CIO's AI Fears
Source: Salesforce Survey

What the research reveals:

  • Vision vs. Reality: 84% of CIOs believe AI will be as transformative as the internet, but real-world challenges keep full integration out of reach for most.

  • Data Takes Priority Over AI: CIOs are currently investing four times more in data management than in AI, seeing solid data infrastructure as a necessary foundation.

  • Pressure to Lead on AI: Over 60% of CIOs feel a high expectation to become AI experts, even as many turn to industry peers for insights and support.

  • Balancing Expectations and ROI: 68% of CIOs sense that business partners have high expectations for AI’s return on investment, often with timelines that feel unrealistic.

  • Readiness Mismatches Across Departments: While customer service is often seen as AI-ready, some CIOs find it less prepared, while marketing is enthusiastic yet lacking in AI-specific skills.

While enthusiasm for AI is high, getting from concept to full deployment demands a strong data strategy, foundational technologies, and robust security protocols—especially as unregulated “shadow AI” tools risk slipping into daily use without oversight.

Moving forward, many CIOs are taking the long view, recognizing that AI success is about building an infrastructure that not only meets immediate goals but is flexible enough to grow with the company. AI offers immense possibilities, but by taking a measured approach and focusing on sustainable growth, CIOs can help create a future where AI becomes a fully integrated and valuable part of business operations—not just a trendy add-on.

It’s a long-term game, and those who approach it with the right groundwork will likely see the rewards as AI continues to evolve.
