Tech companies are cutting thousands of jobs and calling it an AI decision — but is it really?

In the recent episode of the Hard Fork Podcast, hosts Kevin Roose and Casey Newton sit with that question for a while — and it turns out there's more to unpack than a simple yes or no. Atlassian and Block have both announced layoffs recently, and Meta is reportedly considering cutting up to 20% of its workforce. AI keeps coming up as the explanation, but looking closely at each company's situation tells a more complicated story. Rounding out the episode is journalist Jasmine Sun on why AI writing still feels so hollow, and a closer look at "tokenmaxxing" — a workplace trend that raises some fair questions about how companies are measuring AI's actual value.

Here's what came up:

  • AI is part of the explanation, but not the only factor. Companies are pointing to AI when announcing layoffs, but the discussion suggests other factors—like earlier hiring decisions and financial pressures—are also in play.

  • Job cuts and AI spending are happening side by side. Some companies are reducing their workforce while continuing to invest heavily in AI systems, which adds another layer to how these decisions are understood.

  • The way layoffs are explained is worth paying attention to. The idea of “AI-washing” comes up, where AI can become a convenient shorthand for more complex internal decisions.

  • Creative writing still shows where AI struggles. Even with strong language abilities, AI writing often feels structured and predictable, shaped by how these systems are trained.

  • New ways of measuring work are starting to appear. In some companies, employee performance is now partly tied to how much AI they use, tracked through metrics like token consumption.

There's a lot being said about AI and jobs right now, and most of it moves fast enough that the details rarely get a second look. Whether that's intentional or just the nature of how news travels is hard to say — but the details are usually where the more useful questions live.

Layoffs and AI investment showing up in the same announcement doesn't automatically mean one caused the other, and that distinction is probably worth more attention than it usually gets. At some point, it's worth asking what it actually means when the same technology being blamed for job cuts is also the one companies are betting their next decade on. Those two things can both be true, but they don't always add up the way they're being presented.

Global Views On AI Optimism And Concerns

/Matthew Chin, CNBC International News Intern, on CNBC

How people see AI depends a lot on where they are—and what they hope to gain from it. A global study shows that optimism is strongest in emerging markets, where many view AI as a path to economic growth and opportunity. At the same time, concerns about job displacement and unequal benefits remain widespread across regions. The findings highlight a growing divide: while AI opens doors for some, others worry about being left behind.

Leaders Gather To Discuss AI And Responsible Innovation

/University of Texas News

AI, robotics, and ethics are increasingly being tackled together—and not in isolation. At a recent symposium, leaders from academia, industry, and government came together to explore how intelligent systems are reshaping areas like healthcare, work, and creative fields. Discussions emphasized the need for collaboration, responsible innovation, and keeping human values at the center of AI development. It’s a clear signal that the future of AI will be shaped not just by technology, but by how different sectors work together.
