Imagine if your app could make phone calls and handle conversations just like a person—what kinds of tasks would you delegate to it first?

OpenAI is making this scenario closer to reality. At their recent DevDay event in San Francisco, they announced they're giving developers access to their advanced speech technology—the same one that powers ChatGPT's voice features.

Chief Technology Reporter Ina Fried on Axios, covers key updates from OpenAI's DevDay event, where the company introduced new tools that enable more natural, conversational interactions in apps. This technology, previously used only in ChatGPT’s voice mode, opens the door for developers to create more dynamic, voice-driven applications.

What this means for developers:

  • OpenAI’s speech engine, now accessible, allows apps to deliver real-time, conversational voice experiences.

  • Apps like Healthify (fitness) and Speak (language learning) are already using this technology to enhance user interaction.

  • Developers can fine-tune AI models using images, offering deeper customization and personalization options.

  • A live demo at DevDay showed the AI placing an order for 400 chocolate-covered strawberries using Twilio’s API, showcasing the potential for practical, real-world applications.

  • OpenAI requires developers to use its provided voices, with clear guidelines in place to prevent misuse, ensuring ethical implementation of the technology.

We’re at an intriguing turning point. This isn’t just about apps that talk—it’s about creating digital assistants that can truly interact with the world on our behalf. Naturally, this raises important questions. OpenAI has made it clear that using this technology to spam or deceive is prohibited. As these capabilities develop, we’ll need to think carefully about how they are applied in a responsible and ethical way.

The impact of this technology will largely depend on how seamlessly it integrates into our lives. Can it navigate the nuances of human conversation? Will it enhance our interactions, or risk becoming intrusive?

With OpenAI's continued focus on innovation, these tools open the door to more creative uses of AI in everyday applications. As developers begin to explore these capabilities, we can expect to see more apps that merge voice technology with AI, creating smarter, more intuitive experiences for users across a range of industries.
