What if AI could be more than just a tool—what if it could be a teammate?

We often think of AI as just another productivity booster, but what if it could function more like a true collaborator? A new study by Ethan Mollick and a team of researchers from Harvard and Procter & Gamble put this idea to the test, exploring how AI impacts teamwork, expertise, and even workplace emotions.

Their large-scale experiment found that AI doesn’t just help individuals—it changes the way teams work together, blurring the lines between expertise and even improving the emotional experience of work.

What They Discovered:

  • AI boosts performance – Individuals using AI performed as well as two-person teams, and AI-assisted teams created the best solutions.

  • Expertise boundaries disappear – AI helped both technical and commercial experts think beyond their usual roles, creating more balanced ideas.

  • Work gets done faster – AI-assisted groups saved 12-16% of their time while producing longer, more detailed solutions.

  • People feel better working with AI – Participants using AI reported higher excitement and lower frustration compared to those working without it.

The findings suggest that AI is doing more than making work faster or easier. It’s reshaping how people interact, how ideas develop, and how teams function. When AI supports collaboration, the lines between roles and expertise start to blur, opening up new possibilities for problem-solving and innovation.

At the same time, this raises new challenges. If AI can enhance or even replace certain skills, how does that affect the way we value expertise? What happens to the traditional team structure when AI becomes an active participant? These are questions businesses will need to consider as AI becomes a bigger part of everyday work.

Ever wanted a travel buddy that gets your vibe—like a “cheesy romantic getaway” or hidden gems beyond the usual tourist spots?

Booking.com is transforming the way travelers explore destinations and book accommodations by integrating OpenAI’s language models into its platform. In an article, OpenAI details how Booking.com is enhancing travel discovery, making searches more intuitive, and personalizing the booking experience like never before.

How AI is making trip planning easier:

  • More flexible searches – Instead of clicking through filters, travelers can ask open-ended questions like “Where’s a peaceful beach town to visit in September?” and get tailored recommendations.

  • AI-powered trip planner – Built in just ten weeks, the AI Trip Planner helps users explore destinations, create itineraries, and check availability—all through a simple chat interface.

  • Smarter travel matches – AI sorts through reviews, photos, and listings to suggest stays that align with specific preferences, whether it’s “a hotel with a great reading nook” or “a cabin with mountain views.”

  • Quick answers on demand – Need details on check-in times, parking, or pet policies? AI can provide instant responses, reducing the need to contact customer service.

  • Concise review summaries – Instead of scrolling through hundreds of reviews, travelers can see key themes like cleanliness, location, and amenities in a quick snapshot.

  • More efficient host responses – AI-generated message templates help property owners reply faster, making communication between guests and hosts smoother.

Instead of spending hours adjusting filters or scrolling through endless reviews, travelers can just say what they’re looking for and get suggestions that actually make sense. Booking.com has noticed that people are searching in a more natural way, asking open-ended questions and considering a wider range of options before deciding.

AI is helping travelers find what fits without all the extra steps. Rather than clicking through categories, they can describe what they want in their own words and get results that feel relevant. It makes the process feel less like filling out a search form and more like getting recommendations from someone who understands what they need.

In the future, AI could do even more—helping travelers adjust plans on the go, discover unexpected spots, or even rebook flights when things change. Travel comes with surprises, but AI is starting to take some of the stress out of planning, so people can focus on the trip itself.

In a collaborative podcast from MIT Sloan Management Review and Boston Consulting Group, hosted by Sam Ransbotham and Shervin Khodabandeh, Sadun shares insights from her research on digital reskilling and human-machine collaboration. She explores how AI can help workers, from store managers to blue-collar employees, become more effective, satisfied, and innovative in their roles.

As co-chair of HBS’s Project on Managing the Future of Work and co-principal investigator of the Digital Reskilling Lab, Sadun brings a wealth of knowledge about organizational adaptation to technological change. Her research with companies across the globe provides valuable insights into how businesses can successfully integrate AI while addressing the human side of this transition.

Insights from the conversation:

  • AI is helping mid-level professionals make better decisions and improve efficiency.

  • Companies that experiment with AI tend to adapt more successfully to change.

  • AI-driven tools can strengthen teamwork by bridging knowledge gaps between different departments.

  • Continuous reskilling is becoming essential as technology evolves at a rapid pace.

  • In some cases, AI-assisted individuals produce work comparable to high-functioning teams—sometimes faster and with better results.

AI is already being used to optimize workflows, but its real potential may lie in helping employees develop new skills and refine their expertise. Some companies are testing AI’s ability to act as a digital collaborator—providing insights, filling in knowledge gaps, and supporting decision-making. One study even found that individuals using AI performed as well as, or better than, traditional teams in generating innovative ideas.

At the same time, the challenge is ensuring that AI benefits a wide range of workers, not just those in highly specialized roles. The speed of technological change makes it crucial for organizations to invest in ongoing reskilling and thoughtful AI implementation. How companies handle this will not only impact productivity but also shape job satisfaction and career growth in the years ahead.
